Please join us for a special concert celebration to welcome the coming of the winter season.

Meritage Vocal Arts, under the direction of Dr. Sheridan Ball, will perform seasonal choral works by Whitacre, Lauridsen, Rutter and other fine composers of favorite choral works.

Pinió Benetatos & Katheryn Klein, piano duo, will perform Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite”.

For Patrons of the Arts looking for something very special this holiday season—or pre-holiday season—the Friends of Choral Music is presenting A Solstice Prelude concert that promises to live up to every expectation. The concert Saturday, November 19th at 7:30 pm, features the West Coast Premiere of The Nutcracker Suite arranged for 4 hands by Nicolas Economou and will be performed by the dazzling piano duo of Pinió Benetatos and Katheryn Klein. Benetatos and Klein have been entertaining audiences throughout Southern California for over twenty-two years and specialize in all concerti written for two pianos. They perform frequently with area orchestras, and performed Stravinsky’s astonishing “Petrushka” with Meritáge in 2009 to a packed and appreciative house.

Also featured on this special program is Meritáge Vocal Arts, one of Southern California’s premier vocal ensembles, who will perform seasonal choral works reflective of the upcoming winter season. Some of the finest contemporary vocal works will be heard, as well as more traditional pieces. Selections include Eric Whitacre’s haunting and beautiful i thank you God for this most amazing day, Bach’s well-known motet Lobet den Herrn alle Heiden, and Morten Lauridsen’s memorable “Lament for Pasiphaë” from Mid-Winter Songs. Meritáge is directed by Dr. Sheridan Ball, who also conducts the Southern California Master Chorale.

The Nutcracker Suite was arranged for 2 pianos by Nicolas Economou, a Greek from the island of Crete. A precociously gifted pianist, Economou came to international attention at the 1969 Tchaikovsky Competition when he was aged 16. Not only was he an outstanding pianist in his own right, but very close friends with Martha Argerich, one of the most noted pianists of the day. Economou and Argerich are the only piano duo which has ever recorded this arrangement of The Nutcracker Suite, and this West Coast premiere is sure to prove a night to remember.

To Kill A Mockingbird is a Literary Classic. The world never seems as fresh, as wonderful or terrifying, or as good and evil as it does through the eyes of a child. Atticus Finch must teach his children, Scout and Jem, difficult lessons about racial tolerance, violence and prejudice when he goes against the community by defending a young black man falsely accused of a crime against a white woman. One of America’s greatest stories movingly adapted for the stage. Adapted by Christopher Sergel, from the novel by Harper Lee.
